Spice Up Thanksgiving: A Coppin’s Recipe

Bet the pilgrims didn't think of this one!

Bet the pilgrims didn't think of this one!

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving! We’re sure you’re all ready with your holiday decorations and family plans. (There’s still some time before you should put out your Elf on a Shelf, Willow Tree nativity scene, and Kissing Krystals!) Let’s enjoy Thanksgiving for what it is—it’s a time to enjoy food and family, and think about all the things you’re thankful for. We love traditional Thanksgiving foods like turkey, mashed potatoes, and sweet potato casserole. But why not try spicing it up a little bit this year? One of the folks here at CoppinsGifts.com has a great spicy carrot recipe to really kick your Thanksgiving up a notch!

Sweet and Spicy Carrots

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds carrots, peeled and cut on the bias into 2 ½” pieces
  • ½ cup apple cider
  • ½ cup light brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon pumpkin spice
  • ½ teaspoon chili powder
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • Salt and pepper

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil over medium heat. Add the carrots to the water. Cook them for two minutes, then drain in a colander and set aside.

In a medium-sized pot, combine all of the remaining ingredients. Bring to a simmer over low heat. Add the drained carrots and toss to combine everything. Simmer on low heat for five minutes to help the flavors incorporate. Put your carrots into a serving bowl, and enjoy!

From all of us here at CoppinsGifts.com, we hope you have a happy and healthy Thanksgiving. We’ll be here for you all throughout the holiday shopping season to help you pick out the perfect Christmas gifts for everyone on your list.

Are you Celebrating Fairy Day on this Fabulous Friday?

Jim Shore Heartwood CreekWhile it may not be a holiday as well known as Christmas, Thanksgiving and Independence Day, for fairy fans around the world there is much cause for celebration on June 24th of each year. Why, you might ask? Because it’s Fairy Day, of course! What is Fairy Day? According to FairyDay.com it is “the official holiday for fairy collectors, believers, artisans and the young at heart.” Jessica Galbreth, founder of Fairy Day, goes on to say, “This holiday is for everyone who believes in the magic of fairytales. It is for those imaginative souls who dare to dream impossible dreams.” Upon reading that I couldn’t help but think, “I believe in the magic of fairytales! I dream impossible dreams!” And this led me to dig a bit deeper into Jessica’s ideas for how to support Fairy Day. Turns out, it’s quite easy!

If you’d like to celebrate Fairy Day along with us, and we hope you will, the first step is to simply reflect on the magic of your childhood. Think of the times when all things new and exciting earned your wide-eyed intrigue – when fireflies were full of wonder, and you could imagine an entire new friend! Next, step outside your mind a bit and reflect on all the beauty around you. Watch a bee buzz her way from flower to flower, take some time in the sun for deep, relaxing breaths, spread your arms like a bird and let the cool breeze wash over you. In essence, think small and notice it all! It may seem cliché to ‘stop and smell the flowers’, but honestly, when was the last time you did?

Whether you’re a fierce fairy fan, a casual admirer, or you’ve never really given them a second thought, we think the steps for a fantastic fairy day are easy to appreciate for just about anyone. But if you or a friend do fall into the fairy fanatic category, you can take FairyDay.com’s recommendations to the next step and send a friend a fairy card or fairy gift. And we happen to know of a certain designer by the name of Jim Shore who has created some of the most captivating and whimsical fairy gifts of all in his Heartwood Creek collection. My personal favorite is the Jim Shore Heartwood Creek Sewing Fairy, perched atop a spool of thread wearing a thimble for a cap! The Heartwood Creek Musician Fairy is another great pick, and wonderfully captures the power of imagination with a tiny fairy playing a violin fashioned from a leaf.

Whatever your favorite may be, we hope you’ll not only appreciate the artistry, but let yourself get lost a bit in the piece. While leaves may not be violins, and thimbles surely wouldn’t make much of a cap, there are countless magical things all around us just waiting for more than a passing glance. Pet a puppy. Talk to a child about his day. Sip a cup of coffee and really appreciate the rich aroma. And, well, you know…stop and smell the flowers. ;)

Easter Basket Ideas Your Kids and Their Dentist Will Love!

Webkinz Angora BunnyFor most kids and adults alike, there is no harm in enjoying the occasional piece of candy. Candy can bring back many fond memories and even play an important role in creating new traditions and future amazing memories. After all, it isn’t without good reason that grandmothers always have a sweet something tucked away in their pocketbooks for the kiddos – they know we’ll remember those treats forever! But like so many good things, there can be too much of it. There can be too much candy. And too much of this calorie-packed indulgence can lead to excess weight and that 8-letter word we all cringe when we hear at the dentist – cavities. Yes, moderation is most definitely key when it comes to candy, but moderation is something that is easier said than done during the holidays when candy is at every corner we turn! And moderation is possibly the most difficult for children sitting in awe of a chocolate-filled Easter basket brimming with bunnies, jelly beans, marshmallow peeps and more! So what’s a parent to do? Add some balance to the basket with non-candy treats they’ll love just as much. :)

If your child’s basket contains just a few pieces of candy, they’re more likely to enjoy those pieces slowly and avoid that sugary rush that leaves them darting around the house like a Zhu Zhu Pets Bunny, only to crash a little while later. They will also get more long-lasting enjoyment from trinkets and toys than candy will bring. We’ve put together a few Easter Basket ideas for children of all ages. All are well-priced and full of fun!

  • Webkinz Angora Bunny – This oh-so-adorable addition to the Webkinz family is among their softest and snuggliest yet! Her long ears are propped up in surprise as she stares back with that loving gaze that Ganz always captures so well in their premium stuffed animals. Awesome for any age, this little lady is just $13.49.
  • Digital Photo Keychain – Kids love sharing their favorite pictures with friends just as much as adults do, and a digital photo keychain lets them do just that. Our digital photo keychain holds up to 60 pics, and it will be fun to help your child choose which they’d like to add. Don’t forget to include a few from Easter morning!
  • Snoozies – Perfect for tweens, teens and moms alike, Snoozies foot coverings (think slipper-sock hybrid!) are fun to wear and fun to look at. Coppin’s Hallmark offers a superior selection of designs to match everyone’s unique personality so you can keep your feet warm in style. Machine washable – shrink resistant – just $12 a pair. What’s not to love?!
  • Springbok Puzzles – Instead of over-indulging in tons of sweets, you and your children can have a relaxing afternoon putting them together with Springbok’s Treats and Sweets 1000 piece puzzle. Cupcakes, candles, sprinkles and more come together for a puzzle scene that looks good enough to eat, but is calorie-free and fun for the whole family!

Easter Egg Hunt Ideas

Have a fun Easter egg hunt!

Have a fun Easter egg hunt!

Get your kids ready for Easter with our fun and fuzzy Cream Bunny Pillow Pets, Lamb Webkinz, Mazin Hamsters Carrots, and other great Easter gifts!  Kids also love Easter egg hunts.  Kids look under bushes, behind rocks, in tall blades of grass (if your hunt is outdoors) hoping to find an egg with candy or money tucked inside.  With some creativity, you can make an exciting and interesting Easter egg hunt!

Treasure Hunt

An Easter egg treasure hunt is more than just looking for eggs.  There are clues involved, too!  The final egg will contain a clue that will lead to the treasure:  an Easter basket, or one of the great Easter plush toys from Coppin’s Gifts.  Prepare a set of clues for each child.  Write the clues on small pieces of paper, and slip them into eggs.  Give each child their first clue, and send them searching!

Scavenger Hunt

Prepare a chart for each child that lists the kinds of eggs they should find.  Here are some ideas:

__Find 2 yellow eggs

__Find 2 striped eggs

__Find an egg hidden under a table

__Find an egg that matches the color of your shoes

Secret Location Hunt

Do you have your Easter egg hunt at the same location each year?  Why not pick a secret spot for the hunt?  Move the hunt to a campsite, a beach (if you live near one), or even do it in the house!  Switch it up, and the kids will have a great time.

Get ready for Easter with a fun Easter egg hunt!
